The College Business Management Institute (CBMI) offers an intensive course of study in business and financial management for administrators of colleges and universities. Over 500 business officers and administrators, representing hundreds of colleges and universities of every size and description, attend each year.
CBMI is designed to provide participants with an overview of current issues and procedures applicable to institutions of higher education large and small, public and private. Individuals participate in up to 32 hours of instruction each summer for three years to earn a certificate of completion. Ranging from entry level to advance, approximately 60 courses are taught by distinguished faculty who are practicing administrators and leaders in their fields.
Who Should Attend?
Administrators and personnel in higher education who have interest or responsibilities in any of the following areas:
- Academic Departments
- Accounting or Finance
- Auxiliary Services
- Budget or Planning
- Institutional Management
- Physical Plant
- Safety and Security
- Student Personnel
There is no prerequisite to attend CBMI.
CBMI is designed to give participants the opportunity to:
- Discuss the latest issues and topics in higher education.
- Learn how other institutions deal with administrative problems.
- Develop professional relationships with colleagues at other institutions.
- Study administrative issues specific to higher education.
- Prepare for a promotion.
- Gain a broader perspective of higher education business administration.
To provide this broad perspective, each course you take may not be specifically related to your field.
CBMI faculty includes presidents, vice presidents or vice chancellors and other key faculty and administrators of prominent colleges and universities across the nation. Corporate executives also make up the CBMI faculty. The distinguished instructors are practicing administrators and leaders in their fields. They are actively involved with professional associations such as SACUBO, NACUBO, NASPA, APPA, CUPA, NACUA, NACAS, ACUHO and URMIA. The faculty receives feedback through participant evaluations which enable them to improve their instruction each year.
The Southern Association of College and University Business Officers (SACUBO) provides 12 scholarships of $1,000 each to personnel of SACUBO member institutions. The scholarships are awarded annually for one year of study, but applicants may re-apply for additional years. SACUBO registration fees will be paid first out of the award amount. The residual will be paid to the institution after the end of CBMI.
The application period is now closed for CBMI 2017.
Special Needs Services
Participants needing assistance due to a physical disability should note their need on their registration under "special needs" and contact us via email.
CBMI participants are encouraged to wear casual attire to all class sessions. Wear your school colors and show your school spirit at Sunday’s registration and welcome buffet. The Monday evening dance should be "business casual" and the Thursday evening banquet should be "business dressy." The classrooms can sometimes be quite cool; we strongly recommend you bring a sweater or light jacket. We also recommend comfortable walking shoes during the class day. Furthermore, it is advised to bring a travel umbrella.
A group photo of all first-year participants and a group photo of all returning participants will be taken on Monday, just prior to lunch. The photo will be taken behind Memorial Hall. Each participant will receive a copy of the photo at no charge. Since the photo will be taken outdoors, it is encouraged that all participants wear casual attire.
