Navigating Special Asset Management

What do you do when donors leave you the farm, oil well, or cemetery? This session will describe how recipients of specialty asset gifts can manage the acceptance process and future management of those unique assets through prudent and pro-active management. The presentation will include three key elements of a successful specialty asset management program:

  • Planning for ownership (due diligence, pre-acceptance evaluations, market valuations);
  • Management of assets (revenue accounting, land administration, revenue maximization, leasing); and
  • Risk issues associated with special assets (title curative, unforeseen challenges).

Tonya Smith, Relationship Executive, Farmers National Company
Tonya Smith is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Energy Management. Prior to her role as a Relationship Executive in Oil and Gas Management, she was a Mineral Manager, managing a wide variety of client oil and gas portfolios. In her current role as a Relationship Executive, Smith works with individuals, banks, colleges and universities, health systems, and family offices in the development of an effective plan to manage that entity's oil and gas portfolio. Services that may be included in management include oil and gas revenue accounting, leasing, mineral sales, land administration, and risk mitigation.
